I Love Concrete and Children

I know a lot of architects and would be architects love steel and glass, just like my boss. The combination of steel and glass creates a futuristic environment, and the ability to express architecture in a very different way in the sense that roofs can come in a wavy shape or roofs that projects outwards 10 – 20 meters away from the supporting column.

I’m more of a concrete person, there are many reasons behind my love for concrete, one of the many reason would be their simplicity and durability, and also flexibility. Oh yes, I said flexibility and just incase your old fashion out dated, expired lecturer told you no concrete in the world can stand stress – correct him. Read this article on concrete and flexibility. I’m a fan of Tadao Ando. So far I only come across three people that love concrete. The number one person on my list is non-other than Tadao Ando.

No.1 – My Neighbourhood Kids
Yup, they are loud, noisy, playful and creative. Even children love concrete … specially wet concrete. Wet concrete + children handprints = art. Since kids love wet concrete, how about mixing them up together? Combine both… and spend the rest of your life in jail? Well… not really.

No.2 – God
Pompeii is a historical precedent; the children were first buried in ash, then left to rot, and subsequently cast in concrete. Call that karma, punishment or natural art. What ever it is, concrete sure is beautiful, with little effort comes great creativity. Well, that’s god’s play.

No.3 – Vigelands Sculpture Park in Oslo, Norway
Creatively done, if you can’t play god then by all mean counterfeit Pompeii, don’t cast, simply chip off the unwanted part and there you go, a tomahawk like sculpture of children. Look like endless piles of human bodies after a massacre.
