Autodesk Sues Open Design Alliance for Trademark Infringement

I hate to say this but Autodesk and their stable of software from Maya to 3D max and many more lack of innovation. Every two years the guys from Autodesk launch a new version of AutoCAD with minimal improvement, upgrading would cost a bomb and once the deadline is up upgrading is virtually impossible.

Autodesk is trying to lay claim to their version of .DWG and if they succeed in doing so, only .dwg files created with Autodesk AutoCAD shall be readable with their own product, not even SketchUp or ArchiCAD has the rights to import the .dwg files created with AutoCAD.

Autodesk has filed suit against the Open Design Alliance in US District Court in Seattle alleging trademark infringement. The complaint is based on the ODA’s implementation of its DWG software that read and write the AutoCAD 2007 DWG format.

Bottom line: I want to create my data in the format and with the tools that I choose, not that a vendor forces me to choose. You complain about other companies and “Big Brother”. If this lawsuit goes the way of Autodesk, you’ll not be able to choose anything other than their tools to see YOUR DATA in “their” format.

Show your support for ODA by downloading a free version of Graphicsoft ArchiCAD 10.

Structure with minimal disturbance towards mother nature – Landscape Parking. Design in a unique way to blend with the surrounding, only a country that is as rich as Japan can afford to do this.
