Adobe has decided to join the web 2.0 by offering an online version of Photoshop within the next six month. The idea of an online version of Photoshop is due to pressure from competitors, probably a fear that Google or Microsoft might offer similar products as for free online. Revenue would be generated through online advertising, this web based Photoshop service will not be as sophisticated as the desktop application, maybe in the future a paid version would be available and comes with better features.
“That is new (for Adobe). It’s something we are sensitive to because we are watching folks like Google do it in different categories, and we want to make sure that we are there before they are, in areas of our franchises,” Chizen said.
With the introduction of Photoshop online, the company intends to offer other hosted applications gradually, this is inline with the idea that web based application would replace desktop application in the near future. Something which Microsoft is afraid of and fighting hard to adapt to these changes, and if online applications do take over desktop applications, this would render Microsoft’s Windows as a useless operating system – the internet would simply be the next operating system, possibly in the next 10 years it doesn’t matter what OS you are using anymore, it can be Apple, Linux or Windows.
Try Google Documents – a free web-based word processor and spreadsheet, which allow you share and collaborate online.
