Laptop for AutoCAD and 3d Architectural Rendering Software

Laptops are meant to be portable; however, on certain circumstances such as foreign students furthering their studies in a foreign country, the need for processing power overrides the need for portability. Portability comes in handy when one needs to bring the laptop back to their country, other than that, it sits ideally most of the time in their studio or room.

HP Pavilion HDX “The Dragon”, known as a gaming laptop has all the processing power for your architectural need. Apart from its bells and whistle such as HD DVD driver, stereo speaker with woofer and many more, what we as an architectural students are interested in is the massive 20 inch screen size and the ATi graphic card.

Please note that when it comes to choosing the right laptop for 3d renderings and photoshopping, processing speed and the amount of RAM plays a crucial factor, in this case the HP Pavillion HDX comes with a 4GB RAM (maximum RAM one can allocate for Windows), and a good or shall I say powerful ATi graphic card. Contrary to popular believes, graphic card helps to speed up the 3d rendering, this is an urban legend (except for the latest Photoshop CS4), a myth and is not true. Graphic card only render the display on our screen, a better graphic card allows a smoother zooming in and out of Adobe Photoshop, as for applications such as AutoCAD, it will render a smoother and cleaner lines as oppose to jagged lines as we all experience with all those low end computers.

Well, you might haven’t noticed that HD DVD is dead and such laptops shouldn’t be recommended to buy.

Yup, but I think that is an old spec by HP yet to be updated, probably the newer release comes with Blu-Ray. Ignore the bell and whistle, go for the massive 20 inch screen… alternatively, one can purchase the 15 Inch DELL XPS with DVI output and project the screen on a 19 inch samsung/dell monitor.

forget 20 inch screen, HPs has problems with mothercards: they have short warranty and believe me you’ll need to change mothercard soon after warranty expires.
i’m almost sure that dell AND 19 inch monitor would cost you less in the long run

big, heavy and probably way noisy as it’s still all plastic around.
Current macbook pro has faster processor, faster front serial bus, and smarter heat dissipation.
20″ is nothing as macs (used to) have a 17″ macbook pro with same resolution (equals same working area). I’ve had a clevo 17″ big bulky laptop at college and it doesn’t pay off compared to a smaller 15″ macbook pro in many ways. You would still have to install vista or xp to run autocad. But then you’ll have a lot of flexibility in terms of no limitations of software you want to use.
Don’t know about graphic cards… probably the HP beats the macbook pro.

I am using Sony VPCX117LG/B Lap for my business purposes and I never find any problem with it. It is handy and well tamed for my rendering uses.
