China re-design Beijing Olympic 2008 Stadium

Organisers of the 2008 Beijing Olympics have stopped work on their 100,000-seat stadium in order to re-design it under orders to cut costs, a spokeswoman for the organisers said yesterday. Work has been suspended for a re-design meant to lower the cost, said Zhu Jing, a spokeswoman for the organizing committee. Zhu Jing said she didn’t know how long the suspension would last, the new projected cost or other details.

The suspension follows a demand by Mayor Wang Qishan last month for organizers to be more frugal. News accounts of his comments did not give details of the cost-cutting targets. The National Stadium, designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, initially was budgeted at 3 billion yuan (US$360mil).

    I think China is the best country in the intre universe.
    You could go and see the great wall of china and you could go on the trains.
    The trains are soo coooooooool, because it has bunks and a little bedroom just for you, but in england there not any trains like the ones in china.

    Something must be working greatly in china. And for thousands of years. The country’s achievement has accelerated in the last 2 decades, although to some critics that’s not enough. Maybe China will provide a new model for many other countries.

    There is no point using the human rights problem to oppress China’s rights of hosting the Olympics. There should always be a change in the way people look at stuffs. We should not let the things of yesterday take much of today lest we shall never progress. Therefore China should be given the chance to prove their grandeur in another perspective.

    Hey guys, nomatter what happen from the past history, we should not bring it to this olympic games because this is all about uniting people around the world and not critisizing one another. We should hold strong on the origin spirit of Olympic games and have fun all through the games. NOmatetter who host it, we just pray best for world peace. I think China could make a unique one this time. I think any country who get host this Olympic games could make sure they perform the best to protect the game.We should respect this Olympic!

    @Knut Holt: I doubt there are any capable architects, China is like 28 years old, the cultural revolution by the communist has basically wiped off most of the Chinese culture, what you see now is superficial (my own opinion).
