Google 3D Warehouse

Google 3D warehouse is a place where you can search and download sketchup (skp) 3D files found in Google Earth.

I remember reading somewhere once that the Indian government requested Google to filter out sensitive images of Indian military aerial view photos in Google Earth, this makes me wonder how would Osama bin Laden make full use of Google 3D warehouse – search for SketchUp 3D Pentagon. Found any interesting 3D models? hmm…. am looking for Bill Gate’s house, Nasa Space Shuttle, and most of all Honda’s Aibo robot.

The library is relatively new and limited, but I believe in a few months time the “.skp” file would be the standard in displaying 3D models online. Imagine online readers are able to download 3D models of their favorite phone and toy with it and I believe Google plan to roll out a 3D GPS system, where car drivers can navigate thru a virtual city instead of reading a map for direction.

What Google SketchUp lack is a 3D rendering engine with ray tracing and radiocity, and with the freely available libraries on the net plus a good rendering engine, autodesk has just found a new enemy.
